VoteEngine FAQ
Privacy
-
I see you want my email address. Will I get spammed?
No, we do not share your email with anyone. We need your email for password resets and to uniquely identify you. That's it.
-
Will I get emails from VoteEngine?
You have the option to get alerts such as new recommendations from your advisors. You can opt-out.
-
Will I get spam marketing or political emails from VoteEngine?
No. We don't do that.
Becoming an Advisor
-
I want to become an advisor. What do I need to do?
Create an account on VoteEngine, then use the Contact Us form. Please provide your registered email, legal name, address, and phone number. Companies and Non-Profit organizations can also register as advisors.
-
Can I register as an advisor with a fake name?
No. Fake names and anonymous accounts are not allowed by the VoteEngine user agreement terms. Accounts registered to fake names will be removed when discovered.
-
How do I make an anonymous recommendation or comment?
Go to a different website. We do our best to only engage real voters with real advisors. Anonymous recommendations and voting undermine that goal.
Voting
-
Can I vote more than once?
No. Multiple accounts are not allowed by the terms of the VoteEngine User Agreement. Duplicate accounts will be removed when discovered.
-
Can I vote in an election using VoteEngine?
No. VoteEngine is a grassroots survey website. Votes on VoteEngine do not count towards actual government elections and referendums.
Recommendations
-
Can I make a recommendation?
Yes, but you must become a registered advisor (see I want to become an advisor. What do I do? above).
-
How do I pick the legislation to support or oppose?
We recommend using GovTrack.us for identifying and researching bills in Congress.
-
I have found a bill I want to support or oppose. What do I do now?
- In VoteEngine, enter the bill number or title in the Search box and press Enter.
- From the search results, select the bill you want.
- On the bill page, click on Make Recommendation. (Note that you must be logged in and have an advisor account to see this option.) The Recommendation Page appears.
- In the Recommendation box, select to Support or Oppose the bill.
- Enter the Headline, Body, and Preview Text.
- The Headline should be short and capture the attention of readers.
- The Body can be much longer and gives the details of your recommendation. It supports HTML markup if you want to add links or other media.
- The Preview Text appears as a shortened description below the Headline when the recommendation is displayed in a list.
- Click on Image to upload the image for the recommendation. This is required.
- The appropriate image can increase support.
- Do not use images without permission.
- Copyright infringement will result in the removal of the recommendation.
- When you are satisfied with the text and image, click Publish.
- Most importantly, click Share to copy a link to the recommendation. Email, Facebook, Tweets, and messaging are great ways to gain support.
-
How do I edit or delete a recommendation?
Bills in Congress are often updated, sometimes in a way that requires an update to your recommendation. You can change your opposition or support for a bill, along with all content. Note that if you change your position (support or oppose), you will retain only the votes of supporters who selected Sticky Vote. To edit a recommendation:
- In VoteEngine, locate your recommendation. (Hint: use the only my recommendations checkbox on the Recommendations page to display your recommendations.)
- On the recommendation page, click Edit This Recommendation. Note that you must be logged in to see this option.
- Make the changes desired.
- Click Publish.
- Don't forget to click Share to copy a link to the recommendation. Email, Facebook, Tweets, and messaging are great ways to gain support.
Politics
-
Is VoteEngine partisan?
