117th Congress H. Bill 472

H.R. 472 is Not a True Compromise to D.C. Statehood

Daniel Morgan

The District of Columbia-Maryland Reunion Act would reduce the official size of Washington, D.C. to just the nonresidential parts with the main federal government buildings (White House, Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and National Mall, etc.) while the residential portions would be given to Maryland. At this point, the District of Colombia has its own culture, laws, and values, separate that of Maryland. This is not to mention the lack of support for retro-cession from both D.C. constituents and the government of Maryland. In fact, this bill runs in opposition to what the residents of the D.C. actually want, with 86% of those that voted, voting for full statehood. As it stands, the Maryland Reunion Act is a bill that is slated as a "compromise' to D.C. statehood. To support this bill, is to concede direct representation of 700,00 people.
